About this Class

  • Format: Online only, no live or video sessions
  • Exam: scheduled separately

For individuals new to the subject, this qualification offers an introduction to the world of spirits. You’ll explore the main styles and types of spirits to develop an understanding of the key factors affecting flavours and aromas. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

The course includes a study manual, lectures, guided tastings and the exam. Students who pass the exam will receive a digital certificate. Should a student fail the exam, they may retake it for a $75 fee.

The course covers:

  • The basic principles of spirit production
  • The main types and styles of spirits
  • How to serve spirits
  • Factors affecting the flavor of spirits
  • How to describe spirits using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT)

For more information on course content please consult the course specification here.

The online study option matches students with an educator and provides full access to course readings, as well as additional online quizzes, exam practice exercises, and projects to help students prepare for the final exam. The exam is still administered in person at the Texas Wine School or a satellite location. This is an excellent option for students who are unable to attend class and learners who prefer to work at their own pace.

WSET recommends a minimum of 6 guided learning hours to prepare for the exam, all of which will be covered within the online course.
